Browns Trade Winslow to Tampa.
by Administrator on Feb.27, 2009, under NFL

The Cleveland Browns have traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft choices.
Winslow had 219 catches in five seasons with the Browns after being chosen with the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl in the 2007 season.
But he has battled injuries and he clashed with the team’s former management last season. The Browns suspended him for conduct detrimental to the team after he made public comments critical of the organization and former general manager Phil Savage. The suspension later was overturned but Winslow still missed a game.

Michael Vick approved for release to home.
by Administrator on Feb.26, 2009, under NFL

Michael Vick has been approved for release to home confinement, possibly in May, a government official told the Associated Press.
The NFL quarterback is serving a 23-month federal prison sentence in Leavenworth, Kan., for his role in a dogfighting operation based at a home that he owned in Virginia.
Vick’s attorneys had indicated in bankruptcy court proceedings that they expected Vick to be transferred to a halfway house in Virginia for the final portion of his prison term.
But according to the AP, there’s no bed space available so Vick instead could be released to his Virginia home as soon as May 21. Vick would be on electronic monitoring and would be permitted to leave home only for activities approved by his probation officer, the AP reported.
Vick had been scheduled to be released from prison in July.
He remains on indefinite suspension by the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell would have to rule on Vick’s eligibility to play before Vick could resume his NFL career.
Vick remains under contract to the Atlanta Falcons but the team has announced that it intends to try to trade him. Vick possibly could be released by the Falcons, leaving him free to sign with any interested team, if they’re unable to trade him.

LenDale White strikes victim with belt.
by Administrator on Feb.25, 2009, under NFL

Titans running back LenDale White was allegedly involved in an altercation during an incident earlier this month in Denver, but on Monday the city’s district attorney refused to prosecute the case. The Denver police department said the case has been reviewed and “is closed.” According to a police document where an aggravated assault offense was reviewed, the incident took place on Feb. 14 in Denver when White and other parties were involved in a verbal altercation after a minor vehicle accident. White then allegedly struck Leslie Joe Hoch, a white male. “The verbal argument turned physical and (White) began striking and shoving the victim,” the offense report said. According to the report, White, listed as an unknown suspect, “began striking the victim with a belt and belt buckle” before the parties got in their vehicle and fled. Hoch required hospitalization for lacerations, the offense report stated.

Rockets Trade Rafer Alston for Brian Cook and Kyle Lowry.
by Administrator on Feb.19, 2009, under Basketball

The Houston Rockets traded point guard Rafer Alston to Orlando and acquired Magic forward Brian Cook and Memphis guard Kyle Lowry today.
Memphis also received the Magic’s first-round draft pick as part of the deal, said the people, who requested anonymity because the trade had not been announced by any of the teams.
The three-team swap came one day after Rockets star Tracy McGrady announced on his Web site that he’ll have season-ending microfracture surgery on his troublesome left knee.
The Magic, meanwhile, needed an experienced point guard after Jameer Nelson suffered a potentially season-ending shoulder injury Feb. 2.
The 6-foot-2 Alston practiced with the Rockets on Thursday but left before the session was opened to the media. He was averaging 11.5 points and 5.4 assists this season and had 24 assists in Houston’s last two games, both Rockets victories.

Brad Miller returns to Chicago Bulls .
by Administrator on Feb.18, 2009, under Basketball

In the deal with the Kings that is pending league approval, the Bulls are sending four players (Drew Gooden’s expiring $7.1 million salary, the expiring deals of Cedric Simmons and Michael Ruffin, and Andres Nocioni, who has three years and $21 remaining on his contract after this season) to Sacramento for Brad Miller and John Salmons.
Previously, the Bulls showed little interest in Miller, whose contract worth $12.25 million expires after next season. But their late bid to land the Clippers’ Chris Kaman stalled and the desire for a team-wide shakeup prompted the Bulls into action.
In a second potential deal with the Timberwolves, the Bulls would send Kirk Hinrich (who is scheduled to make $26.5 million over the next three seasons) for the expiring salary of 7-foot center Jason Collins and another unknown piece, possibly Brian Cardinal. This trade clearly would be a salary dump.

T-Mac will miss the remainder of the season.
by Administrator on Feb.18, 2009, under Basketball

Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady said he will miss the remainder of the season to undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee, ESPN reported late Tuesday.
McGrady was examined Tuesday in New York and has another examination scheduled for Wednesday. Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said there would be news about McGrady’s condition sometime this week.
Alexander, however, described McGrady as a ‘superstar’ and said that the team had no interest in trading him.
“I don’t think we’re going to part ways with Tracy,” said Alexander. “Everybody wants us to. We acquired a great superstar and everybody wants us to trade the great superstar. You don’t get superstars that often.
“Daryl (Morey, the Rockets general manager) and I were talking this morning. We both discussed how great Tracy is in the playoffs. There’s very few people who have the ability to step up their games in the playoffs and he does. So we’re not looking to run away from Tracy.”
McGrady is averaging 15.6 points per game, making a career-low 38.8 percent of his shots.

Hornets trade Tyson Chandler to Thunder for Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox.
by Administrator on Feb.18, 2009, under Basketball

The Oklahoma City Thunder have acquired center Tyson Chandler from New Orleans in a deal that sends veterans Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox to the Hornets.
After years of trying to draft and develop a front-line center, the move finally gives the Thunder a proven talent inside. The 7-foot-1 Chandler has averaged 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds this season as the frequent recipient of All-Star point guard Chris Paul’s alley-oop passes.
For the Hornets, the trade provides an opportunity to shed salary in an uncertain New Orleans economy by adding two contracts that expire at the end of the season. The Hornets also got the rights to DeVon Hardin, a second-round pick out of California in last year’s draft.

Bosh to Bulls, Amare to Raptors in 3-team deal .
by Administrator on Feb.17, 2009, under Basketball

Rumors are swirling in NBA circles that the Bulls may acquire Raptors forward Chris Bosh, and Toronto may receive Suns forward Amare Stoudemire as part of a three-team trade before Thursday’s deadline, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The Suns would acquire a package of players and draft picks from the Bulls. Chicago’s Drew Gooden and his expiring $7.2 million contract, Tyrus Thomas and a first-round pick would likely be parts of the deal.
Bosh is just 24 years old and already is a four-time All-Star. His salary is $14 million this season and $15.8 million next season, with a player option of $17.1 million in 2010-11.
Stoudemire, 26, is also a four-time All-Star, and he started in this year’s contest. He is due $15.1 million this season and $16.4 million next season with a $17.7 million player option for 2010-11.
The Bulls were among the teams reported to be interested in Stoudemire. Phoenix GM Steve Kerr hinted Monday that after firing coach Terry Porter, the team might not trade the player, though the Sun-Times speculates Kerr could be trying to induce teams to increase their offers.
Phoenix Suns suspends Jason Richardson for one game.
by Administrator on Feb.17, 2009, under Basketball

The Phoenix Suns have suspended Jason Richardson for one game without pay as the result of his arrest on allegations he was driving 55 mph above the limit with his unrestrained 3-year-old son in the car.
A Scottsdale police officer first saw Richardson driving 67 mph in a 40 mph zone Sunday night and followed him, police said Monday. That’s when the officer clocked him at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone and pulled him over.
Police said Richardson admitted to speeding and identified himself as a Suns player. The officer saw Richardson’s son in the back seat of the car and that he was not in a child seat.
He was arrested and charged with reckless driving, excessive speeding and failure to use a child seat. He was released from jail after a few hours.

Kobe and Shaq lead West past East 146-119 in All-Star Game.
by Administrator on Feb.16, 2009, under Basketball

The 58th NBA All-Star Game had plenty of flair even before tip-off. As the dance troupe JabbaWockeeZ entertained the crowd at U.S. Airways Center during pre-game introductions, Shaquille O’Neal emerged from the shadows wearing one of the group’s masks — and ‘The Big Cactus,’ as he is known in Phoenix, danced and danced.
The Phoenix center, making his 12th All-Star appearance, did his best to add some entertainment value, before, during and after the game. He showed off his dance moves during pregame introductions and toyed with the crowd during the game as well.
For that reason alone, he deserved his portion of the game’s Most Valuable Player award, which he shared with Bryant.
There were co-MVPs in this one, too, and the fact they were former Lakers teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant at least provided some postgame intrigue to an event that was otherwise lacking in drama.
The Western Conference scored a 146-119 victory, the sort of blowout that usually sends much of the crowd home long before the final buzzer, and it seemed a fitting ending to a weekend that NBA fans in the Valley of the Sun will remember most for all the negativity that surrounded their hometown team.
