Rockets Trade Rafer Alston for Brian Cook and Kyle Lowry.
by Administrator on Feb.19, 2009, under Basketball

The Houston Rockets traded point guard Rafer Alston to Orlando and acquired Magic forward Brian Cook and Memphis guard Kyle Lowry today.
Memphis also received the Magic’s first-round draft pick as part of the deal, said the people, who requested anonymity because the trade had not been announced by any of the teams.
The three-team swap came one day after Rockets star Tracy McGrady announced on his Web site that he’ll have season-ending microfracture surgery on his troublesome left knee.
The Magic, meanwhile, needed an experienced point guard after Jameer Nelson suffered a potentially season-ending shoulder injury Feb. 2.
The 6-foot-2 Alston practiced with the Rockets on Thursday but left before the session was opened to the media. He was averaging 11.5 points and 5.4 assists this season and had 24 assists in Houston’s last two games, both Rockets victories.

Good Trade for the Rockets. Its time for Aaron Brooks to take over that position.Rafer’s contract was going to up this year, so good move.

Rockets just traded Rafer?!?! Wow, not sure I like that.

The Rockets needed to do something with their inconsistent starting point guard play, and this is the first step in addressing it. Brooks gets his chance now, and no more O’fer Alston.
Offense, Offense, Offense.
…
I love this trade.

What a stupid stupid trade. You kiss Stacey McGrady’s butt and give Alson the boot.

The thing is if you look at Lowry’s stats you get almost the same production as Rafer in less minutes with a worse field goal percentage from three but a better younger shooter from the field overall. We essentially traded for a younger backup to Aaron.Rockets kinda got Brooks as our starter with this trade. Good trade. Had to clear some money with Tmac’s decision. Rafer had to go anyways for Rockets to be considered contenders. Rockets can win with Brooks if he steps in and scores like he has when given the opportunity.

Wow…
I love Lowery as a point guard..tough as nails, a defensive gem, fearless driver but shooting wise is much worse than Rafer. At least he will not hoist 3pters recklessly. It looks like a salary dump as well and rids the Rockets of Alstons off season personality problems.
Overall we lose experience , defiinitely short term benifits Orlando (I am JVG approved the trade with his brother Stan) but in the long run we gain an explosive player with upside. I guess this puts the ball in Brooks hand as the starter.

I am on the Aaron and Lowry wagon. Go Rockets! These guys are pretty good too. Aaron and Lowry arent just chop liver. I wouldnt be too thrilled if say Moochie or Maloney was waiting in the wings but Aaron and Lowry gets me excited. Those two are way better than some points Rockets have had in the past. Maybe both are even better than Rafer when it is all said and done. I am even more excited to see them play now again!
